Uganda Canoe Federation is 20 years in existence. Part of these years was the country was using local boats made from timbers. The Royal Buganda Kingdom is the leading Region where the Kabaka’s Canoe Regatta have been held for time immemorial. Canoe competition as a sport, has no origin in Uganda but Buganda had held the monopoly.
It was because in 1971/2 Mr. Nicholas Onegi – p’ Minga now the Assistant Secretary General of the Uganda Olympic Committee, was awarded a German Scholarship to go and train as a swimming Coach alongside George Odeke Athletics and James Adoa Basketball. He returned back to introduce the modern Olympic Canoe and subsequently followed by the introduction of others like; Handball, Archery, Rowing, revived shooting sport with the latest introduction of Dragon Boat. Canoe is composed of the following Executive members;
There several members as Chairmen of the various Commissions. The Federation now boasts of 18 new Olympic boats which they are using now to induce several young talents of all ages and their prospective are extremely high. They are nor developing a Youth and under 11-12; 13-14; 15-16 and 17-18 age groups. The results are promising. The Federation had two FISA courses in 2005/6 in Mombassa and South Africa plus one successful Olympic Solidarity Course conducted by Mr. Jim Flood from England in July 2008. Pontious Ekyee Onegi and Martin Neen Komakec are the current outstanding top crews.
The sport is to be officially Launched in June this year. |
